چکیده

We study the regularized, oscillatory, multiscale, quasilinear, elliptic problem in divergence form − div(Qη(x, x , u)∇u) = f, in Ω, (0.1) u = g, on ∂Ω, (0.2) assuming that the conductivity has the form Qη(x, y, r) = a−(x) + (a+(x)− a−(x))βη(r − ψ(x, y)), (0.3) for some domain Ω ⊂ Rn, n ≥ 1, a regularization βη of the Heaviside step function and a locally periodic function ψ(x, y), Y -periodic in y. The equation is studied qualitatively as well as quantitatively in terms of the limit processes η → 0 (loss of regularity) and → 0 (highly oscillatory problem data). Elementary theoretical results for the equation are accompanied by the construction of numerical methods based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Element Hetereogenous Multiscale Method (FE-HMM) of approximating solutions to the considered equations for different parameter regimes. The numerical experiments suggest that the devised solvers exhibit the expected convergences for the test cases studied. The theoretical study shows that as η → 0 solutions to the parameterized equation converges weakly in H1(Ω) to some function solving an equation where an extra term emerges, describing the interaction of the solutions with the level set function ψ, a phenomenon not present in the case where ψ ≡ 0. Furthermore, the empirical evidence points in the direction that depending on the structure of the obstacle ψ solutions u ,η converges to a function u =0,η which does not solve an equation of the same structural form as u ,η does.

The Homogenization Method Applied to the Computation of E¤ective Thermal Conductivities of Composite Materials

To solve boundary value problems of stationary heat distribution in composite materials, one has to solve partial di¤erential equations with rapidly oscillating coe¢cients. These equations are in general impossible to solve numerically by standard methods. Instead, one wants to ...nd constant, effective conductivities and solve the corresponding boundary value problem to get an approximate solu...

Sensitivity Analysis of Limit-Cycle Oscillating Hybrid Systems

A theory is developed for local, first-order sensitivity analysis of limit-cycle oscillating hybrid systems, which are dynamical systems exhibiting both continuous-state and discrete-state dynamics whose state trajectories are closed, isolated, and time-periodic. Methods for the computation of initial-condition sensitivities and parametric sensitivities are developed to account exactly for any ...

Hydraulic Jump over Negative Slopes with Negative Steps

Many studies have been conducted on the characteristics of hydraulic jumps over horizontal basins. On sloping basins, however, few such studies have been performed so that the issue requires more investigation. A significant number of studies has also been conducted on basins with positive slopes but comparatively few have been carried out on basins with negative slopes. This study was carried ...

Numerical integration of highly–oscillating functions

By a highly–oscillating function we mean one with large number of local maxima and minima over some interval. The computation of integrals of highly–oscillating functions is one of the most important issues in numerical analysis since such integrals abound in applications in many branches of mathematics as well as in other sciences, e.g., quantum physics, fluid mechanics, electromagnetics, etc....

Stochastic functional population dynamics with jumps

In this paper we use a class of stochastic functional Kolmogorov-type model with jumps to describe the evolutions of population dynamics. By constructing a special Lyapunov function, we show that the stochastic functional differential equation associated with our model admits a unique global solution in the positive orthant, and, by the exponential martingale inequality with jumps, we dis...
